My friend Ken at Madfoot Japan hit me up with some pics of their first summer '09 release, a brand new model called the Madfoot Oboi, a performance dance sneaker developed by Madfoot sneaker don Takashi Imai in conjunction with Omarion. In an increasingly pretentious and trend-sensitive streetwear market Madfoot have refused to water down the colourful eccentricity of their designs. By staying true to Mr Imai's original creative vision Madfoot have become the outsiders- a streetwear brand maintaining its quality without feigning to be a tastefully sterile and anonymously slick high-end luxury label.
People might jump on or off this shoe because of the Omarian link, or they'll pit it against the Yeezy because of the similar velco strap wrapping the forefoot (despite the Yeezy itself taking this look from the Ato Matsumoto Cow Hide boot). However a tight shoe is a tight shoe, period. This is a clean, well balanced production that stands tall on its own merits.
I'm always happy to give Madfoot airtime because the people behind the brand are genuinely warm, welcoming, and willing to embrace anyone coming from the left-field of street culture. When you meet folk as laid back, generous and culturally open-minded as the Madfoot crew you can't help feel like they're family.
Out June. Thanks to Madfoot for the heads up.
